A Risk to Personal Privacy

How the US Government is affecting Control of your PC
Apr 17th, 2026

On April 13th, 2026, Josh Gottheimer introduced H.R.8250, also known as the Parents Decide Act
This, if made law, would require every Operating System used in the US to implement Age Verification before a user account can be setup on that system.

This may seem unimportant to you, but it will affect almost everything you do.

Your PC, of course, has an OS. So does your phone. If your car has a touch interface, it has an OS. If your fridge can connect to the internet, it has an OS. Any electronic device, beyond having the simple ability to turn on, has some form of an operating system.
This means that to use any of these devices, you would have to verify your age before using it; this would, most likely, be accomplished by submitting some form of ID.

The drive behind this action is to keep children safe online; to prevent them from accessing parts of the internet they shouldn't be going to.
Unfortunately, though intentions may be honorable, it creates three very large problems;
1. Whatever you do, wherever you go, you can be tracked.
2. If someone uses a system (say, a friend borrows your computer) and does something legally questionable, it would be your ID tied to that action.
3. Wherever the IDs for this age verification are stored, if there is ever a data breach, will cause mass amounts of personal information to be easily accessible.

I, personally, do not condone this. There is nothing wrong with trying to put safeguards in place for children online.
However, this ham-handed approach, that involves such a needless invasion of privacy is, I feel, unnecessary.
I wanted to bring this to the attention of anyone out there who feels the same, and let you know you can reach out to whatever legal & political representatives you have for your area, and let them know you don't agree with this.

A-OK Computers may increase prices in the future... maybe

Apr 4th, 2025

After the news of the far-reaching tariffs the US is planning to implement, A-OK Computers may be forced to increase its prices, both for good and labor, to compensate for inflation & goods. This is not for certain; currently this is merely an announcement to keep everyone aware of what's happening. There WILL be another announcement in the future when/if this happens.

A-OK Computers will no longer carry AUKEY products

from Alex, Owner/Technician
Mar 31st, 2025

After a failure of some AUKEY earbuds purchased last year, I ran into some trouble trying to get them replaced. Though the warranty was still "valid" for 2 years, their policy has some caveats to it.
Many of their warranty "guarantees" specifically state they may honor them at "their sole option".
If someone says "I promise to help you.... when I feel like it", that's really not much of a promise at all.
Of course, I only learned about this after reaching out to them. That particular model of earbuds is no longer produced, thus they can't replace them. Instead, they offered me... $5 off my next purchase?
Personally, I feel this kind of "resolution" insulting, and unbecoming of a company that touts its products as one of quality.
Thus, from this point forward, A-OK Computers will no longer carry, sell, or in any other way distribute AUKEY products. Not without a major policy change, anyway. If a client SPECIFICALLY requests a product of theirs, I will happily oblige. However, I won't guarantee it at all.
I mean, if they won't warranty their products, then there's no way I effectively can.

After it was unceremoniously taken off-line at the end of 2024, we've been working hard to not only restore it to a working condition, but completely change the look.
Today, it's paid off!
I may be partial, but I think it looks fantastic. Here's to much success in the near future!

Windows Update may turn on BitLocker, destroy your Data

Mar 3rd, 2025

There have been incidents of Windows 10 & Windows 11 updates unintentionally activating BitLocker on machines.
BitLocker on its own is not harmful. It's used to encrypt your data, making it harder to steal. In some fields, this is very much required. Without the proper encryption-key, there really isn't a way to access anything therein.
However, if someone doesn't know it's on, and the system has an error, the system will lock & require that encryption key to access everything again. An encryption key that, of course, the user has no way of knowing since they didn't actually activate it in the first place.
It's recommended you periodically check your system ensure it's not on, and turn it OFF if you don't use it.

New Tool Development

A-OK Computers is Developing a New Tool
Oct 4th, 2024

We're in the process of developing a new tool -- that is, a new piece of software -- to make it easier to run repair processes on your system.
Designed specifically for Windows 10 & 11, it takes advantage of many of the powerful system repair & cleanup services available, without needing to know the specifics of console-commands.
It might still not be the most user-friendly thing out there, though.
Only time will tell.
